While visiting the Omaha Zoo, I peeked into an enclosure for Blue Dart Frogs, saw nothing, and moved on. Then a young boy stepped up to the same window and exclaimed, “Dad, look at all the frogs!” I decided to go back and take a second look. Sure enough, there in plain sight were at least a dozen bright blue frogs I had missed with my cursory glance.
Bible study is often like looking into a zoo display and missing the animals. Many brilliant truths exist in every passage waiting to be discovered, but when I don’t immediately recognize them, I move on to the next paragraph. It is only after taking time to seek and contemplate that I begin to see. Bible speed reading rarely yields deep understanding.
Something else I noticed at the zoo is that others are normally eager to help you spot an animal. Did you see the cheetah? He’s over in the corner against the wall.” I look to where my new friend is pointing and see a bit of spotted fur and the flick of a tail. It makes me wonder if I’m as eager to share what I discover in my Bible where I have seen things more brilliant than a dart frog and more exciting than a sleeping cheetah.
What amazing truths have you discovered this week?
