Alligators in the Bedroom

Why does a ringing phone take priority over an in-person encounter? Have you ever been enjoying a conversation with a friend, their phone rings, they answer it, and you never get to finish your story about the alligator you found in your bedroom. Perhaps my friend wasn’t interested in my story, perhaps the phone call was urgent, although I do wonder what could be more interesting or important than an alligator in my bedroom…unless it would be an alligator in your bedroom. Maybe that’s what the phone call was about.

I wonder what God thinks about interrupted prayer and Bible study. Does it bother him at all that something important comes up just when I am about to start my quiet time? “Excuse me Sovereign Lord and Ruler of the Universe, but I have a call coming in from the President. This could be important.”

I am glad that God’s love for me is not affected by my rudeness toward him. However, I do struggle with giving importance to the things I say are important. Spending quality time with God is one of them. In an unforgettable line from The Chosen, Matthew explains what it is like to follow Jesus. He says, “I have only one thing to do today; follow Him.”
