Today I am enjoying one of my simple pleasures by sitting on my patio and looking out at the large oak tree and open field beyond my back fence. Another simple pleasure is to bake a loaf of bread, put a slice in the toaster, and then squash an avocado on top. With a shake of seasoning, I know of nothing so tasty.
Simple pleasures are things that can help us to be grateful. When I fail to enjoy them, I find that my anxiety level rises. I press myself to work harder and faster just to get to the finish line. But finish lines do not satisfy, because there is always another that follows. I am trying to learn that life is not something to rush through but to enjoy and savor.
Psalm 149 tells us that God takes time for pleasure and invites us to join in celebration.
“Let them praise his name with dancing,
making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
he adorns the humble with salvation.
Let the godly exult in glory;
let them sing for joy on their beds.” (Psalm 149:3-5)
God is not in a hurry. He takes pleasure in us. I want to take pleasure in him.
Psalm 127:2
(A Psalm of Solomon)
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat — for The Lord grants sleep to those He loves.”
I believe The Lord Himself advocates for simple pleasures since He created them all 😊
Thank you, Lord …
And thank you Pastor Don for your wise reminders.
