I thought I knew that quote, but I had it wrong. I’m talking about a famous quote by Abraham Kuyper, which I thought said, “There is not a square inch in all of creation over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, ‘Mine!’” It was recently pointed out to me that what Kuyper actually said was, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, ‘Mine!’’’
Why should this mistake matter? What is the difference between “all creation” and “the whole domain of human existence?” For me the difference is this; when I thought of God being Sovereign over creation, I was able to limit his sovereignty to the material world–everything outside of myself. It is easy to cede authority to him over mountains, rivers, trees, sun, moon, and stars; but if he is Sovereign over the whole domain of human existence, that includes everything inside of me. This means that God has authority over my thoughts, attitudes, and emotions. This means that God is LORD over me.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Yes, God created birds, flowers, and hills to show his glory, but he also created everything inside of me to do the same.
For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13-14 ESV)
