I recently had the following conversation with my friend, Dymsley Lowatt.
Dymsley: I may not be the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but at least I’m a bulb in the chandelier.
Me: What chandelier is that?
Dymsley: I don’t know. Does it really matter? I’m just glad to be screwed in somewhere.
Me: But, Dymsley, it does matter. You’re right, each of us is a light, but what are we illuminating?
Dymsley: I guess I never really thought about it. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world,” so I guess I’m just here to shine.
Me: That’s true, but let’s look at the rest of that passage. It’s in Matthew 5:14-16.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Dymsley: That’s what I want to be: a bulb on the hill and not under a basket. I want to shine brightly.
Me: That’s good, but did you notice what Jesus said about why you should shine?
Dymsley: Yeah, to give light to the world.
Me: Well, not quite. If you look at the last part, it says that we shine so others can see our good works, and those will give glory to God. If we don’t have good works, then our light is just illuminating an empty room. People will come by, open the door, and say, “Wow, it’s bright in there, but there’s nothing to see.”
Dymsley: Okay, I get it. Our light shines on our good works, and they give glory to God.
Me: Exactly! “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.
You are so clever Don !!!! This was an eye catching conversation to bring glory
to God. I got it , you see, I”m not Dim, I hope Ley did also.
