What is your opinion of Trapper Craig? This past week, he has been helping me to rid my property of skunks and opossums that have been ravaging my yard by digging holes as they search for grubs. Each night he baited a trap and then came in the mornings to pick up the captured animals and release them safely somewhere outside the city. On Tuesday the trap was empty, on Wednesday there was a skunk, on Thursday an opossum, and on Friday the trap was sprung, but the varmint escaped. Is Trapper Craig cruel, or helpful?
In 2 Corinthians 10:1-6, the Apostle Paul compares himself to a trapper. Members of the Corinthian church were complaining that Paul had been unkind in a previous letter he had sent them. Paul defends the boldness of his words by reminding the Corinthians that they are in the middle of a battle against spiritual varmints that are ravaging their church. He claims that his job is to “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
The spiritual varmints that Paul was working to take captive back in the first century are still loose and destructive today. Therefore, the job of exposing, trapping, and disposing of them continues. What are the ideas, philosophies, arguments, and desires that ravage faith today? What are you doing to capture and destroy them?
