I got a new perspective on leadership this week while watching a play about the life of King David. This play depicted David as a man under tremendous stress because he believed the future of Israel depended on him. The burned-out king sent his men to battle without him. Then, loneliness and a sense of entitlement led this husband of at least six wives to seek comfort from one more. He chose the wife of one of his most trusted and trusting soldiers.
Burnout for me came at a time when the image I had of myself was a sink with hundreds of drains and only one faucet. The trickle coming from above was hardly enough to provide water for one hose, let alone hundreds. So many people were depending on me, and I had nothing left to give, or so I thought. The solution was actually quite simple—open the faucet. I was not alone; my pride was shutting off the faucet of help. What I needed was more of God and less of me. When I got that straight, my stress was relieved.
