Like a pebble in a shoe, little things can dominate and control our spirits. The lives of my wife, Cathy, and I have been so dominated for the past few weeks. It was a very small thing, only a six-millimeter something hidden in her breast. It couldn’t be felt or seen without instrumentation, but it was able to put our plans on hold, stop our travel, and consume our thoughts.
There are so many tiny things that can influence and change the trajectory of your life:
- A single word, kind or cruel
- A compliment or a criticism
- A smile
- A sudden inspiration
- A mistake
What small things are disrupting your life?
- A little lie?
- A small habit?
- An irritation?
The book of Hebrews provides us with a list of people who did big things (chapter 11), but follows it up with a plea to pay attention to the little things:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV)
It’s the small things that will kill you, so don’t let them have control. Hebrews tells us that if we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will not grow weary and lose heart. For us, he provided a celebration. The diagnosis was benign.
