Zelda was a dog, created by God, and dearly loved. She was a Corgi, a breed that is perhaps best known as the one chosen by Queen Elizabeth, who owned more than thirty of them. Zelda never met the queen, but I doubt she would have chosen the palace over the humble apartment she shared with my son and daughter-in-law. After all, who would choose the crown jewels over belly rubs and walks in the park with your owner? Unfortunately, a lot of us.
Zelda has taught me about what is important in life. Micah 6:8 tells me that what is essential is “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Jesus said that we should “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” (Matthew 6:33) Zelda taught me the truth of these verses. Obeying her master, enjoying his love, walking on his leash, and extreme loyalty—these were the things that brought her joy. I want to live that way with my master.
